Lindsay's Excellent Adventures at Orienteering!

being a record of a shameless unranked orienteer in his declining years (declining ability, not declining a glass of wine, that is).

Each of these pages is the outcome of my attempt at an Orienteer-of-the-Year event run for the Victorian Orienteering Association. There will be a map showing the course, plus a summary of my thought processes, if any, as I navigated my way around the course.

(The images will take about two minutes to load through a 28.8k line.)

The original stimulus for this activity was to share thoughts with fellow Tuckonie clubmembers who were on similar courses to me. Now, however, I have retreated to course 8 (M50+AS, or a short, technically difficult course for over-50 males, in principle anyway), so these pages are still for sharing but also perhaps for the curious to see that it is still possible to run with cunning even though you can't run.

There is also the idea that I will learn some new Web techniques by doing this...

OY1 2000. - The Blowhole.

March 11, Daylesford.

A rare Saturday event, and a Badge event, to start the season off, on the map used for the 1999 Victorian Championships. The weather was hot, overcast early and humid, reaching the high 30s later in the day.

The map...the North lines are 500 m apart. Victorian Orienteering does not usually preprint courses on maps except for major events, so the course is marked on by me with a biro before starting. The Start is at the triangle, the finish is the double circle, the control features are described in the discussion below.

OK - have a look at the course, and plan your own response to these challenges! Unfortunately the detail is not as clear as in the original - but a high-quality GIF file would take ages to download! Email me with comments or feedback, if you wish.

When or if you want to see what I did, move the mouse over the object on the left hand side of the image. To see my course discussion in another browser window, move the mouse over the object at the foot of the image. That window can be moved, resized, or closed independently of the main window.

Now go to the next event?
