(Geophysics Segment)

This page summarises the segment, and contains pointers to some background material. As the subject was given for the last time in 1997, it will not change in the future - but it might continue to exist as a WWW resource.

The main Powerpoint presentation from class can be downloaded in .pdf format.

The short segment on plane-wave-at-a-boundary interactions is available here.

However, a password is needed to open the files. For the present that password is freely available if you would like to email me with your name, address, and interest; this will let me gauge whether further development is warranted.

Synopsis

There are two parts to this presentation:

A simple background to Seismology is presented, aimed at explaining how gross Earth structure is found from seismic wave observations.

An equally-simple introduction to seismicity is presented, showing how earthquakes are located and in turn how the locations and source processes illuminate aspects of Plate Tectonic theory.
