The Argon Laboratorary at Melbourne University is in the process of being upgraded. This task is being undertaken by the new Director, Dr David Phillips. Research and analysis in the laboratorary will commence shortly.

New research projects are presently under review, but are likely to include:

i) 40Ar/39Ar geochronology and thermochronology of ore systems;

ii) Dating shear zones and deformation events using micro-analytical techniques;

iii) Storage and evolution of noble gases in the mantle;

iv) Thermochronology of cratons, using 40Ar/39Ar, fission track and U-Th-He methods;

v) 40Ar/39Ar geochronology and argon diffusion systematics of exotic minerals;

vi) 40Ar/39Ar geochronology of volcanics in Victoria.
