The Earth Science Student Society (ESSS) aims to advance the educational and social opportunities for students studying Earth Sciences at the University of Melbourne. The ESSS was reaffiliated with the Melbourne University Student Union in 2005 and has since been growing in strength.
The ESSS is responsible for organizing the Earth Science Annual Ball and several barbecues throughout the year. These events aim to facilitate the interaction between undergraduate students of different year levels, post-graduate students and lecturers.
This year the ESSS is looking to become more involved with students in the department through initiatives listed below
- Regular fortnightly barbecues
- Introduction of Membership Cards with discounts in surrounding cafes
- An Earth Science Dinner, hopefully in conjunction with Monash University
- An Earth Science Student Handbook, currently being written giving students firsthand advice specifically towards their earth science degree with information on material such as Vacation Work
- ESSS apparel such as a t-shirt, a key ring and drink cooler
- The ESSS would also like to help with finances for the Post Graduate Seminar Program that allows staff members PhD students to present part of their work to the department. This kind of interaction encourages the discussion of industry and cutting edge research in the earth sciences and presents plenty of opportunity for students to start networking for their future careers.
