Joint Electron Microprobe (JEM) Facility

Management structure:

The JEM Facility utilises a fully automated Cameca SX50 electron microprobe equipped with four wavelength dispersive spectrometers (WDS) and an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The instrument was commissioned in February 1989 and predates the formation of VIEPS. The current equity distribution in the facility is:

Earth Sciences, Melbourne University 40%
Earth Sciences, La Trobe University 20%
Stockdale Prospecting Ltd 20%
Chemical Engineering, Melbourne University 10%
Earth Sciences, Monash University 10%

The JEM Facility is under the general direction of a management committee that comprises representatives from each of the equity holders in the instrument. Each equity holder provides a suitably trained operator who is responsible for that holders bookings and for the routine operation of the instrument on the allocated day. The current representative and trained operator for each equity holder are:

The Facility Manager is Dr Alexander Priymak who coordinates bookings, supervises the day-to-day operation of the instrument and provides extraordinary technical support when required.

Access and bookings:

Access to the facility is arranged on a weekly basis around the equity shareholding outlined above. The week-day (nominally 24hrs from 9am to 9am the following day) machine time arrangements are:

Earth Sciences, Melbourne University Monday, Tuesday
Earth Sciences, La Trobe University Wednesday
Stockdale Prospecting Ltd Thursday
Earth Sciences, Monash University Alternate Fridays
Chemical Engineering, Melbourne University Alternate Fridays

The Earth Sciences, Melbourne allocation includes time for maintenance, developmental work and commercial income generation. Weekend machine time is less formally allocated but is also booked around the equity outlined above, e.g. Earth Sciences, La Trobe are entitled to one weekend in every five weeks, whereas Earth Sciences, Monash are entitled to one weekend in every ten weeks.

Equity holders may formally book machine time additional to their allocation but at the charge given below. VIEPS bookings are made though the relevant institutions operator listed above.

Unused, unbooked time cannot be accumulated, and machine time lost due to instrument down time cannot automatically be claimed later.

Charges:

Equity holder according to time
allocation and providing own operator: No charge
Other Departments & Universities: $50/hr without operator
Commercial: $150/hr without operator
Operator $50/hr extra.
