These are fairly solid scientific articles, written within a space
limit so they are terse and may be difficult to read. Files are in pdf
format so you will need Adobe's pdf reader either integrated with your
browser or as a stand-alone application.
The Introduction to each one gives an overview
of the topic.
Athabasca Vallis is a 2003 MER target, interpreted as a site of recent liquid water outbursts and lava flows. Here, we examine unusual linear cone chains within the flow channels and find that CO2 may have had a major role, either alone, or with H2O. Basal melting of the permanent polecaps of Mars is often inferred from terrain features. We show that a water ice cap cannot melt under likely conditions, so either the polecap contains large amounts of CO2, or the evidence for melting is incorrect.
