Details of the Graduate Program in Environmental Science

The Faculty of Science Graduate Program in Environmental Science provides rigorous and challenging learning opportunities for professionals in the environmental science field seeking professional development, and for newcomers seeking a solid grounding in the scientific principles for future career development. The Program teaches students essential skills in empirical modelling, environmental risk assessment, effects assessment, statistics and other methods essential for identifying and solving environmental problems.

Students will be able to tailor the course to meet their requirements, choosing full-time or part-time study options and by specialising in one of three areas:

Each specialisation is composed of several core subjects.

The names and contact details of the Coordinators for the program are given at the end of the prospectus.

The program offers three qualifications:

Master of Environmental Science

Graduate Diploma of Environmental Science

Graduate Certificate of Environmental Science

The Graduate Program in Environmental Science is open to graduates with a three or four year degree in any discipline from the University of Melbourne or other tertiary institutions. Entry requirements are detailed below.

The program offers a combination of semester-long subjects, and one- and two-week intensive courses. Courses are completed by accumulating a certain number of points which are awarded upon passing subjects. Point values for each subject are provided together with subject details. The program is interdisciplinary, drawing subjects from the faculties of Arts, Engineering, Law, Science, and the Institute of Land and Food Resources. It is predicated on the assumption that interdisciplinary study nurtures holistic solutions to the challenges resulting from human activities in the natural world.

Course Planning

There is a Coordinator for each specialisation who will assist with subject selection and enrolment plans. The faculty will approve the final application. Subject details and class schedules are provided in this prospectus but Coordinators will provide additional information if it is required.

If you are interested in a Masters degree by research, please contact the Faculty of Science for details.
