The Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science is one of the largest and oldest faculties in the University, with about 6,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The international standing of the Faculty is reflected by its remarkable success rate in attracting funding through peer-assessed grants, the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NH&MRC), as well as direct funding through Special and Key Research Centres. Faculty research activities include the work of its own research centres, and collaborative ventures and joint facilities with universities and other bodies within Australia and internationally.

Fees

Each student will be liable for the Course Fee. The Graduate Program in Environmental Science functions on a full-fee recovery basis. The University-approved full fee for these courses has been set at $15,000 p.a. for Australian and New Zealand residents for Masters by course work, and $12,000 to $14,000 p.a. for all graduate and postgraduate diplomas. Fees for international students enrolled in the graduate coursework are higher. However, the Faculty of Science will provide a part-fee remission bursary to all newly enrolling Australian and New Zealand residence students in 1999. This will result in a student contribution to each course (i.e. after receipt of a part-fee remission Bursary) as follows:

Course Aust/NZ Students (Full-time) International Students (Full-time)
Master of
Environmental Science
$9,200 per year* $17,500 per year *
Graduate Diploma of
Environmental Science
$9,200 per year * $16,500 per year *
Graduate Certificate of
Environmental Science
$9,200 per year * $16,500 per year *

* pro rata, depending on the period of enrolment or workload undertaken per semester. The fees above are for a normal full-time load of 50 points per semester.

The fees above apply for the 1999 academic year. The fees quoted are annual fees (for a standard full time load for one year) unless otherwise stated. Fees per semester are calculated according to the number of points taken and may vary from semester to semester. The fees set out above will remain unchanged for students commencing in 1999 for the length of their course plus one year, provided that normal academic progress is not interrupted. Local students may enrol in these programs part-time, and the fees due per semester will reflect the workload undertaken. Fees must be paid at the commencement of every semester of enrolment. The Student Support Services office at the University of Melbourne is available for financial advice, if required.

Community Access program

Many of the subjects listed in this document may be available through the Community Access Program, which is administered by individual faculties. Please consult the Community Access Program brochure for further details, contact the Faculty Office responsible for the subject you intend to take, or see the web address http://www.unimelb.edu.au/ExtRels/CAP/index.html.

Employment During Study

A full-time candidate may undertake paid part-time employment. Work undertaken, including enrolment in coursework subjects not related to the thesis, must not interfere with the student's study program. The University does not stipulate the maximum hours to be worked but recommends, as a guide, that more than nine hours per week, during normal working hours, would be undesirable. It is the responsibility of the student, supervisor and Head of Department to ensure that paid work will not jeopardise the completion of the course of study in the time allowed.
