The University of Melbourne
Over 144 years of history, The University of Melbourne has established an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The University of Melbourne is a world class research-based university. We set high standards in research, scholarship and graduate teaching. This year, it again received more national competitive research funding than any other Australian university. Melbourne continues to attract top students from across the country. Our students have access to state of the art facilities, technology and teaching. As a result, our graduates have consistently moved into employment or further study at a higher rate than graduates from other Australian universities. Its total postgraduate population currently numbers more than 8,000 students from over 90 countries.
The Campus
The main campus is based in the inner city suburb of Parkville, and is a five-minute tram-ride or fifteen-minute walk north of the city centre. The location gives students access to all the city has to offer. The neighbouring suburb of Carlton provides access to speciality shops, cosmopolitan cafes and restaurants.
The campus itself, set on 22.5 hectares, is compact and landscaped. The University is like a self-contained village, with its own theatres, cinema, art galleries, bookshop, computer suppliers, sports facilities, cafeteria, coffee lounge, cafes, chemist, hair salon, banks, post office, travel agent, newsagent, milk bar, food cooperative, and stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables, secondhand clothes and general goods.
Add to all this the many cultural and artistic activities on campus — exhibitions, art gallery, concerts, student theatre productions — and those of the sports and other clubs, and you have plenty to cater to your intellectual, creative and physical persuits.
The Community and Student Services
Our 32,000 national and international undergraduate and postgraduate students come from a great diversity of social and cultural backgrounds. Graduate student support services are excellent.
