Secondary Schools Earth Science teaching resources.
"Rock, Mineral and Ore" specimen sets are available for loan from the School of Earth Sciences for teaching / extracurricular lessons in schools.
Each set contains:
- Volcanic / igneous rocks to interpret their magma source by colour and texture.
- Ores - since most have their origin / concentration by igneous activity these follow on from Volcanic rocks. The most interesting thing of course being their colour, their industrial use and the concommitant change in properties and colour. Some specimens show a crystalline form.
- Minerals - the pure chemicals that are the components of rocks / ores, and therefore we are able to observe their geometry on the macro scale.
(the perfect wooden shapes we have could accompany this sector)
- Sedimentary rocks
- Metamorphic rocks (these follow on from Sedimentary as the metamorphic effects on sedimentary rocks are most graphic)
- Fossils (the treasures of previous life that are retained if sedimentary rocks undergo mild pressures under a long period without the intervention of the more severe conditions of metamorphism.)
Specimens are all good quality and eye catching and are a mixture of commonly found rocks and minerals as well as a few rarer pieces.
Teaching notes are provided with the specimens which will help teachers develop an excellent hands-on lesson approaching Earth Sciences from the point of nature's recycling process.
