Structure & Metamorphic Group

The Structural and Metamorphic Group at the University of Melbourne has evolved over the last decade around the research interests of Chris Wilson, Roger Powell , David Gray and Mike Sandiford. In addition to Chris, Roger and Mike, the group presently includes 5 post-doctoral fellows, 10 PhD students, 6 BSc Honours students and 2 research assistants.

The main research interests within the group are:

  1. Integrated structural, metamorphic and chronological studies in metamorphic terrains to elucidate orogenic processes.
  2. Theoritical Petrology, including the calculation and portrayal of phase equilibria using the software package THERMOCALC, developed by Roger Powell and Tim Holland.
  3. Ice deformation: both microscopic experimental work and macroscopic structural glaciology.
  4. Structural and metamorphic aspects of processes related to the deformation of gold deposits.
  5. Numerical modelling of deformation and fluid flow processes that contribute to the formation of a mineralised system.
