Staff

The following is a list of the current staff involved in the Structural and Metamorphic Group. Included is a very brief blurb for each person's research interests. In most cases more information can be found on personal home pages. Just follow the links!

Chris Wilson

Prof. C. J. L. Wilson BSc (Hons), PhD (ANU)
email: cjlw@unimelb.edu.au

Chris Wilson is currently committed to the following research activities:

The crustal structure of western Victoria and relationships to gold mineralization (supported by ARC and MPI Mines Pty Ltd
• Origin of the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau (supported by ARC with collaboration with colleagues from Chengdu University of Technology and Chinese Academy of Sciences
• Structural investigations in the Antarctic continent and understanding of the dynamics of ice masses (supported by Australian Antarctic Science Grants)

Roger Powell

Assoc. Prof. Roger Powell BSc (Hons. Durh.), DPhil (Oxford)
email: RP@earthsciences.unimelb.edu.au

Roger is interested in using maths, stats, chemistry, physics and computing to solve geological problems. An important part of this work is the collaboration with Tim Holland at Cambridge on the thermodynamics of minerals and applications to rocks, via the software package, THERMOCALC.

(Roger: "I didn't like the photo of me that was used here before.....This frog is much more attractive).

Mike Sandiford

Prof. Mike Sandiford BSc, PhD (Melb.)
email: m.sandiford@earthsci.unimelb.edu.au

Mike's essays and musings.

Prof. David Gray BSc, PhD (Macquarie)
email: drgray@unimelb.edu.au

Dr. Steve Boger BSc, PhD (Melb.)
email: sdboger@unimelb.edu.au

Dr. John Miller BSc, PhD (Monash)
email: jmm@unimelb.edu.au

John has been involved with the developing of new structural models for western Victoria based on field observations and Ar/Ar dating. He is currently employed in the pmd*CRC where he is involved in dating mineralised systems in Victoria, Mount Isa region and the Yilgarn terrain in Western Australia.

  Dr Tim Rawling
email: trawling@unimelb.edu.au

Dr Rick Squire BSc (Hons, Monash), PhD (Tas.)
email: rsquire@unimelb.edu.au

Rick Squire is currently investigating the volcanic and sedimentary facies architecture of the Late Cambrian to Early Ordovician successions hosting the Stawell gold deposits in western Victoria. His work will attempt to establish the volcanic and sedimentary facies architecture of the host successions, in order to better understand their controls on the geometry of the gold-rich ore shoots at Stawell. He is also interested in the palaeogeographic and palaeotectonic development of fold belt terrains such as the Lachlan Fold Belt, and their implications for metallogenesis.

Dr. Richard White BSc, MSc (Syd.), PhD (Macq.)
email: r.white@earthsci.unimelb.edu.au

Richard White's research centres around the application of mineral equilibria modeling using THERMOCALC to a range of metamorphic problems. His recent projects have involved the application of mineral equilibria calculations involving a recently developed thermodynamic model for silicate melt to understanding mineral reaction textures and melt behaviour in granulite facies rocks. This research draws on extensive metamorphic/ structural field studies in granulites from east Antarctica and central Australia carried out before he was possessed by THERMOCALC.

  Alison Dugdale
email: dugdale@unimelb.edu.au

Lynn Evans
email: laevans@unimelb.edu.au

Hadi Sim

Hadi Sim BSc (Hons. Monash)
email: hadims@unimelb.edu.au

Hadi studied at Monash University and has a BSc (Hons. Geology) degree. He is currently working in the Ice Laboratory as a research assistant to Prof. Chris Wilson. Amongst other things, his duties involve conducting ice experiments and creating multimedia presentations. Hadi designed and maintained the following sites:
Antarctic Tectonics
Flow in Polycrystalline Ice
Fabric Analyser
