Record high and low maximum and minimum temperatures for each state, and for Australia as a whole, sorted by month may be found here.
While records are presented for each location as a whole, there have been numerous site relocations, either from one site to another separate site (as at Adelaide in 1977-79), or within the same general area (as at Brisbane Airport in 1987), which affect the likelihood of extreme temperatures at any location. At a later date, it is planned to post records adjusted to remove such inhomogeneities, using a technique described here.

These records span the period for which digital records are available in the Bureau of Meteorology's electronic archives, except for a few sites for which I have entered additional data from manuscript records. This covers the full period of record at capital city sites except for Perth and Hobart, and (in general) from 1957 at other sites. Most of the records are current as of early 1998.
