Overseas study as part of your Earth Sciences degree

The School of Earth Sciences encourages students to spend a semester or a year at another University, as part of their University of Melbourne degree. Usually this would take place in second or third year. Students who have been on an overseas exchange find it a rewarding experience that broadens their horizons.

There are a number of ways to study at an overseas institution as part of your degree:

Exchange: The University of Melbourne has formal exchange agreements with a number of institutions worldwide. In this program, University of Melbourne students continue to pay fees here and do not pay fees to the overseas institution. More information, including how to apply and a list of Universities that have such exchange agreements, can be found here.

Here are some Universities with Earth Sciences programs that also have exchange agreements with the University of Melbourne:

The University of Birmingham (School of Geography, Earth & Environmental Sciences)

University of British Columbia (Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences)

Cornell University (Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences)

University of California at Los Angeles (Department of Earth and Space Sciences) (Department of Atmospheric Sciences)

University of California at San Diego (Department of Earth Sciences)

The University of Edinburgh (School of Geosciences)

University of Glasgow (Division of Earth Sciences)

Pennsylvania State University (College of Earth and Mineral Sciences) (Department of Meteorology)

Study Abroad: A slightly more complicated option is study abroad. Here, the student takes a leave of absence from the University of Melbourne and pays fees to the overseas institution. This option is appropriate if there is no existing exchange agreement. More information can be found here.
