Important information
You should be self-sufficient for the duration of the trip. Therefore, you will require:
Personal items:
• food (see below)
• sleeping bag (or sheets and blankets)
• pillowcase and pillow
• towels
• toiletries and personal medication
• appropriate clothing, daytime temperatures are likely to be in the range between 20 C and 35 C so you will require sufficient clothing to protect you from the sun - i.e., long sleeved shirts, long pants
• wet weather gear
• strong lace-up boots are essential as we will be working on rocky coastal exposures
• sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
Field equipment:
• water bottle - 2 L containers (plastic juice or soft drink containers are light and work well)
• comfortable and sturdy rucksack for use during the day in the field
• clipboard with A4 paper
• field note book (preferably waterproof)
• drawing equipment (pencils - HB and coloured, eraser, sharpener, protractor, ruler)
• hand lens
• compass, in working condition ** absolutely essential
• geological hammer
• personal first aid kit - recommended, bandages, bandaids, scissors, pocket knife, pain killers, antiseptic ointment etc.
Meals and Accommodation
At both Mallacoota and Cape Conran we will be staying in on-site caravans and cabins. As noted above,
you will need to bring pillows, pillowcases, towels, sleeping bag (or sheets and blankets)
The trip will not be catered so you will need to be fully self-sufficient in terms of meals. The
accommodation will be fully equipped with cooking utensils (crockery, pots, pans, cutlery etc.) so you
will not need to bring these items. At Mallacoota we are staying near the centre of the town, so you can
choose to eat out in the evening if you prefer and you can obtain supplies at the two small supermarkets. At Cape Conran, however, there are no shops or other facilities so you will have to cook for yourself. We are able to re-supply at supermarkets in Cann River mid-way through the excursion.
It is advisable for you to organize yourself into groups to share essentials like cooking oil, eskies etc.
A copy of the itinerary, personal packing requirements and more detailed information will be sent by email in late January. Please make sure you regularly check your university email during this period
